New research tracking US consumer wellbeing shows finances improving, but still gloomy
US consumers saw a slight improvement in their financial wellbeing in the first quarter of this year as inflation eased the pressure on household budgets, but their situation remains extremely depressed, according to a new measure developed by investment company Alliance Trust.

Inflation facing elderly drops sharply to 3.9% but gap widens between old and young
This month’s official inflation report showed that the headline rate of inflation fell to 2.3%. Although Alliance Trust’s ongoing monthly study of age related inflation reveals a drop in the inflation rate facing all age groups, it is the two oldest age groups which have benefited most this month.

This month’s official inflation report showed a surprise increase in headline inflation to 3.2%, but Alliance Trust’s ongoing monthly study of age related inflation reveals that over 75 year olds face an inflation rate which is much higher than the official rate, at 4.9%.

Elderly missing out on full drop in inflation
Latest figures show another welcome decline in headline inflation but Alliance Trust’s ongoing monthly study of age related inflation reveals that the over 75 year olds continue to face an inflation rate which is 90% higher than the official rate. Despite headline inflation falling to 3.1% in December, the over 75s inflation rate remains far higher. The elderly saw the smallest decline among all five age groups, leaving them facing a rate of inflation of 5.9%, which is 90% higher than the headline rate and more than double the inflation rates facing the under 30s and 30-49 year olds.
